So, I never posted about Phantom!
It was absolutely phenomenal. They re-did so much. The opening scene (Overture) was beautiful because they actually showed everything going back in time, had the ballet dancing to the music, and the entire scenery throughout the performance was so much more realistic and on point.
I didn’t care for the actor who played the Phantom. He wasn’t nearly as powerful or in-your-face-with-deranged-insanity like the character is supposed to be. He was super young and, though his voice was beautiful (sort of reminded me of Michael Crawford), he didn’t give me that awe-inspiring feeling. It left me feeling unconvinced and disappointed. Also, the chandelier wasn’t at all as intense. I’m used to sparks flying out as its rising, but all it did was light up and blink a couple of times. They also changed some of the lyrics to Wishing You Were Somehow Here again…which I wasn’t too thrilled with.
However, the girl who played Christine was perfect. She portrayed more of the 17 year old, fragile, naive Christine that she should be. They added some scenes that were brilliant and flowed nicely. When Madame Giry is telling Raoul about the Phantom, they actually had a shadow against the wall depicting everything. They changed the final lair scene a bit in how the Phantom exited. Also, instead of Christine coming back and returning the ring personally, she put it on his desk and ran away before he could see her. Then he found it and looked around for her and then the mob catches up with him.
All in all, I was pretty pleased and impressed. If you can go see it while they’re on this US tour, I’d highly recommend it. I wept like a baby and apparently hyperventilated a little at one point, hahaha. I can’t help it. It hits me on a personal level.
Yay, Phantom of the Opera! <3
